CANADIENS 2007 MONCTONIAN MAJOR CHAMPS
A second period goal by Simon Bissonnette turned out to be the difference as the Fredericton Canadiens won their sixth straight game at the 2007 Monctonian AAA Challenge to become the Major Midget Division champions Sunday afternoon at the Tim Horton's 4-Ice Centre with a 3-2 victory over the New England Huskies.
The Canadiens led all the way despite coming up against a red hot goaltender in Cory Cotnoir of the Huskies. who stole several potential goals away from the Canadiens. Cotnoir was presented with the Duane Pound Memorial Goaltending Award for his effort.
Jason Martin in the first period and Patrick Ryder in the second provided the other goals for the winners while Pier-Luc Broussard of Dieppe, NB in the second period and Tevor Peltak in the third scored for the Huskies.
Martin was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the championship game while Jon Tower, also of the Canadiens was selected as the Most Sportsmanlike Player.
The Canadiens won all three of their round robin games out scoring their opposition 13-3. They won their section and were ranked second following that portion of play. They faced Halifax McDonald's in the crossovers and it took a goal by Brett Bernard 47 seconds into the third overtime to allow them to afvance to Sunday morning's semifinal.
Jon Waye came up with the first of two big games of the day between the Fredericton pipes in the semifinal shutting down the Dartmouth Subways 3-0. Bernard again scored the game winner while Michael Querry and Mike Washburn into an empty net provided the insurance.
The Huskies, who were mainly members of the Fitchburg Huskies who play in a junior league in New England, made the final by also going undefeated and winning their section. They doubled up Central IcePak 6-3 in one of Saturday's crossover games and squeezed by Cole Habour McCain Major Midgets 3-2 in their semifinal game.
This is the second time in five years the Canadiens have won the title and the fourth time since the Monctonian started 26 years ago.
