Bantam Matrix Complete Regular Season
The Mid-Isle Matrix Bantam AAA Hockey team completed their regular season play on Monday, Feb 4 in Rustico with a chance to clinch first place in the PEI Irving Oil Bantam AAA Hockey League. They hosted the Kings County Kings in a must win for the Kings in order to still have a shot at top spot in the league when they complete their sched.
The Kings went ahead early in the first with a PP goal and then uped their lead to 2-0 before the end of the first. The Matrix put pressure on Kings goaltender Ryan Deagle all period, but were not able to beat him. League leading scorer Thomas Flynn then put the Kings in front by 3 with a PP goal which the Matrix disputed as they thought goaltender Jon Miller was interfered with. Another Kings goal before the half way mark of the game chased Miller and had the Kings in control on the scoreboard at 4-0. League Leading goaltender Dylan McQuaid came in to relieve Miller and shut the door the rest of the way, as the Matrix buckled down and only gave up a few shots the rest of the way.
The Matrix finally were able to get on the board with about two and a half minutes remaining in the middle frame with a PP goal of their own by rookie center Isaac Jay. Jay tapped in a rebound off the point shot from Rob Miller after some good puck movement by the Matrix.
The third frame was scoreless, but not for lack of chances for the Matrix. They pressured all period long, only to have Deagle turn them away time after time. Things got heated with some chippy play late in the third, as it looked as though the Matrix were sending the Kings a message in hopes that they meet them in the Best of 5 Island Championship next month.
The Matrix finished their regular season play with a 18-4-2 record good enough for 38 points and top spot in the league for the time being.
The Kings may still have something to say about that coveted position as they now own a 16-4-2 record with 2 games remaining in their regular season. The Kings won the regular season series 2-1-1, therefore, they would get top spot should they finish off with the same record.
The League Awards Banquet is at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 9 in Kensington, PEI on Friday, Feb 8 at 5 PM. The League All-Star Game is slated to follow at Community Gardens at 7:30 PM.
The Matrix Representatives are forwards - Spencer Montgomery, Jason Cameron, & Matt Stead. Jonny Richards was selected to the team, but will be unable to play due to injury.
On defense, the Matrix will send Veterens Drew Coulson & Isaac MacDonald, while League Leading goaltender, Dylan McQuiad will get the start between the pipes for the West All Stars.
Mid-Isle will now await their fate of getting either a bye in the first round or will open up their playoffs against Pownal on the weekend.
